Concept 40 Brainstormers

#2:

I feel that one of my close friends, we'll call him Q for privacy, has a lot of potential for his education.  Q has good intentions, but does not have the level of motivation that he needs to reach that potential.  I have been trying to encourage Q in his studies, but I don't think I'm doing enough.  I think a good talk or lecture would set Q straight again, but he's almost there and just a little push could get him in the right direction for a good education.

Concept 39 Brainstormers

#1:
I am extremely afraid of heights.  This is most likely due to my inexperience in being in high places or areas.  I would overcome it if I was in a predicament where something or someone was in need of assistance.

#2:
In 4th grade, there was a play where everyone had to participate.  I was very nervous, but my parents say just to have fun out there.  When my part came, I had the time of my life out there on the stage.

#3:
My hero is afraid of failure.  He is very self conscious about his actions and ponders what he has done in his free time.

Concept 12 Scene

Justin and Kervin

                                                      The Janitor's Dream

FADE IN,

INT. - JANITOR'S OFFICE

ROBERT, the school's janitor, is busying himself with his normal everyday routine.  He stops for a moment to think about his life and how he got here.  In his thoughts, he is thinking:

                                                        ROBERT (V.O.)
What am I even doing here? I
wanted to be an astronaut, not a darn
                                            custodian.

Robert hears footsteps from behind him, knowing exactly who it is.  Without even turning around, he knows it's MS. KOLLINS, the school's principal coming to ask him to clean something up or to move something somewhere else like she always does.

PAN TO - Ms. Kollins' high heels

                                                       MS. KOLLINS (O.C.)
Robert, I need you to clean up a
huge mess near the cafeteria, could
you do it as soon as possible before
                                            lunch begins?

CUT TO - Robert

                                                        ROBERT
                                                 (unwillingly)
Yes, Ms. Kollins.  I'll get right to
                                            it.

AERIAL - Top corner of the room where we can barely see Ms. Kollins' high heels.

                                                        MS. KOLLINS
                                            Good.

Ms. Kollins turns around and walks out of the janitor's office, leaving Robert alone to his thoughts.

CU - Robert

Robert sighs and drops his equipment that was he fumbling with.  Sighing even harder, he swipes everything off the shelves.

POV - Robert

He stares at the floor, looking at all of his equipment and belongings he just threw onto the ground.
He bends down and starts to pick them up, placing them back onto the shelves one by one.  He notices an astronaut figurine, picks it up and stares at it for a few seconds.

ANGLE-ON - Shelf-level looking across the shelf

Robert tries to replace everything the way it was, very slowly.  We see him place the astronaut onto the shelf even slower than the rest of the things.

AERIAL - Same corner from before

Robert sighs one last time, grabs his equipment for cleaning up floor messes, turns off the light and closes the door.

                                                                   ROBERT (O.S)
                                                         Well, there's always tomorrow.

Concept 38 Brainstormers

#1:
About 8 years ago, I got into a fight with one of my classmates.  He was very much a show-off and pompous about himself.  He thought he was better than everyone else, very different from how I felt in elementary school.  I was the jokester and liked to crack jokes frequently.  One day, he tried to tell me off on how I wasn't funny at all, but in reality I thought he was just jealous.  He said some nasty words and he and I were in a tussle.

#3:
Hero traits - Favors justice and fairness, likes women, protects the environment

Villain traits - Self-interest, thinks women are the cause of most problems, very industrial and has no care for any ecosystem.

The temptress or damsel in distress would be a very big conflict, the difference in how they see the environment would create some political debate between them.

Concept 37 Brainstormers

#1:
Glory
Saving Private Ryan
Time Traveler's Wife

Sense of emotion after becoming emotionally attached to the character(s).  Some twists right before the ending to make it a roller-coaster ride.

#3:
My cousins and I switched the wasabi at a sushi place with guacamole and dared one of the older cousins to eat the whole wasabi (guacamole).  He spat it out and ran to the bathroom.  I don't know how this kind of trick would apply to an audience, unless on a talk show or if I was a chef serving an audience.

Concept 36 Brainstormer

#3: My main character's conflict is that he does not know what happened the previous day/night.

Easy ways to solve the problem instantly:
1. Remember it.
2. Find someone who does.
3. Not worry about it.

Obstacles to block the easy ways:
1. Can't remember it.
2. No one remembers.
3. Something will occur that happened the night/day before and be required that the main character has to recount what had happened.

Concept 35 Brainstormers

#1:
1 -Dave
2 - Harry Potter
3 - Star Wars
4 - Robin Hood
5 - Joan of Arc
6 - Braveheart

#2:
Braveheart, I would do almost anything, especially for freedom or country.  Braveheart is a very passionate and aggressive protagonist, and would do almost anything for his people because he sees himself as a sort of leader and martyr.

#3:
The last time I took a risk in order to gain something, it was when I was still a kid.  There was a sort of tournament at our elementary school for some kind of prize (I can't remember) and I wanted it for my mom (pretty sure).  The participants had to do an assortment of things that were both challenging and fun at the same time.  It took a lot of energy (I was chubby when I was younger) and I didn't win in the end. My parents were happy for me regardless for even trying, so it wasn't all for not.

The villain's power would be to read the hero's mind.  The hero would steal Magneto's helmet and proceed to beat the living snot out of the villain.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Structure

I think the nonlinear structure of 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' was very interesting.  Joel was in his mind about 75% of the time of the film.  It added a lot to the story and theme, but for the most part it only added to the characters near the ending.  I liked the story the way it was told, a twist on the normal get-back-together structure.  'Eternal Sunshine' was very different from the other nonlinear films we watched, since the story was mostly told all in the mind of a single person.

Concept 32 and 32 Brainstormers

Concept 32
#1: Can't name a movie, but directors usually add in a side character that people would care about and the main character would have to make a decision pertaining to that particular side character

#2: Can't name a movie, but you would frequently see in the background or cameos of the bigger story that encompasses a larger spectrum than what we see currently.

#3: Add in extreme disaster shots for added effect.

Concept 33

#1: Yes, random acts of kindness by strangers towards me have sometimes had a ripple effect on me.  There are times when I go out in which something will happen to me and complete strangers would come help me.  Later that day usually, I would see something happen similar to me and I would help that person.

Concept 30 and 31 Brainstormers

Concept 30
#1:
Kelly:
A - Kelly wants to be popular with the "in" crowd at her school.
B - Her geeky cousin is staying with them and would want to bond over the summer and Kelly doesn't want to be mean about it.

Kelly's Mom:
A - Kelly's Mom invited Kelly's geeky cousin to stay over the entire summer.
B - Kelly's Mom wants them to bond so they can have a healthy relationship.

Kelly's Cousin:
A - Kelly's Cousin wants to stay with them during the summer.
B - Kelly's Cousin wants to spend more time with Kelly.

Compatible - Mom B and Cousin B.  Mom B and Cousin A.

Incompatible - Kelly A and Mom AB/Cousin AB.

#2:
Win/Win - Have Kelly's Cousin end up being really cool instead of "geeky" as Kelly first thought.
Kelly becomes geeky like her cousin.

No Win/ No Win - Kelly and her cousin hate each other to the point that Kelly's mom does not want any people over.

Win / Loss - Kelly's cousin does not come over and Kelly's mom gives the O.K. to have Kelly bring in the "in" crowd to their house.

#3:
A - The main character wants help in school to be able to go to college.

B -  The main character creates multiple bonds with her group of friends.

Concept 31
#1: Cowboys & Aliens, 50/50, Thor
Cowboys & Aliens - Very early - Main character is found by roaming bandits
50/50 - 1/3rd into the movie - Main character is diagnosed with a rare cancer
Thor - Early - Main character loses his powers and is sent to Earth

#2:
1) I may become friends with the person in the wheelchair.

2) He would at first be in shock, then thank me and be in my debt forever.

3) They may look at me oddly for helping someone or congratulate me and may become friends with the kid in the wheelchair.

4) They would be very angry at me and the kid in the wheelchair and harass both of us until my friends or his friends come to our aid.

#3:
The pedophiliac teacher would make first contact with our main character.  This would lead her to enlisting the help of her newly-acquainted friends.  Values would be lowered to be in line with her new friends.  Skill level would rise because of new tips and tricks learned from the new friends.  Relationship would grow with new friends in a new setting.

INT. - PARENT'S CAR - NIGHT

MR. and MRS. JOE are conversing on how the night went.

                                                              MRS. JOE
It was nice to see those two
again.  It's been SUCH a long
time since we had a good con-
                                                  versation like that.

                                                               MR. JOE
                                                   Yup.

INT. - JOE'S HOUSE - NIGHT
INTERCUT CLEANING SEQUENCE

JOE is standing in the middle of his living room, a mess and in shambles compared to what it had looked like a few hours ago.  Joe knows his parents must be coming home by now, since it is a few minutes after 10:00pm.  Joe surveys the scene of the crime.

                                                                JOE (V.O.)
                                                        Oh boy... what a night.

He hurriedly begins to clean up the room.  Just as he is starting to get some progress towards removing all evidence of his party, the phone rings.  Joe hesitates for a second, then walks over to pick it up.

                                                                JOE
                                                                     (nervously)
                                                        Hello?

Concept 28 Brainstormer

#2:

1.  The arrival of both parties at the Appatomox Court House.  I would do this to introduce who was at the scene where the Confederate States surrendered to the Union.

2.  The signing of both parties on the treaty, ending the Civil War.  A very important event and should be the main point of the master scene.

3.  The announcement and feelings afterwards of the signing of the treaty.  A fitting conclusion to a bloody Civil War.

Concept 27 Brainstormers

1.  Thatcher should ask the question during a ride together on the subway.  This way, it won't seem like Thatcher is only talking to her about homework.  Also, he would have the possibility of being able to talk even more with her than just at a school corridor between classes.

2.  Setting: Film Studies Classroom
Social Background: Working on a script
Size: Big enough
Décor and Lighting: Classroom with posters and references to movies or T.V. shows.

3.  Film locations I would choose for a non-linear story are: a parking lot, an expansive National Park, a subway, an abandoned house

A person would take multiple ways to get to the same location each time, with different things happening every scene respectively.

Pilot Critique "Love Hexagon"

Format - 2

Unique/Interesting Characters - 1

Entertaining Story/Conflict - 1

Formatting is off, change of fonts and weird gaps of spacing in between scenes.  Characters have nothing unique to each other.  Story is typical life of a group of girls having a crush on a single guy.  No real conflict other than fighting over one person.

Friday, November 18, 2011

Groundhog Day Reflection

The non-linear structure that they used is that the main character relives the same day countless times until he finally has a day where he becomes the best person he could possibly be.  Groundhog Day is more like Run Lola Run than Memento and Citizen Kane.  In Run Lola Run, the main character doesn't necessarily 'relive' the same day but we see the same scenario play out three different ways.  This is similar to Groundhog Day because the main character in Groundhog Day plays out each day differently than the last.    In Citizen Kane and Memento, they don't use this type of non-linear structure.  Citizen Kane has the same person but from different perspectives on multiple things and in Memento it's reverse-chronological order.

Pilot Critique "Cheaters"

Format - 1

Unique/Interesting Characters - 1 1/2

Entertaining Story - 1

Did not use the correct Script Format.  The characters are very stereotypical, a lot like cheerleaders.  There is not really a story here, other than all the girls liking a football player named John Tucker.

Pilot Critique "Troubled Life"

Format - 3

Unique/Interesting Characters - 2

Entertaining Story/Conflict - 2

Format is all good.  Only the main character is any interesting at all, barely any exposition on her "friends" and Jeremy.  Conflict has not really been too crazy, yet.

Psycho Reflection

There are many different ways to experiment with screenplays, such as killing off the hero very early.  That's what makes it most creative and interesting and unique compared to modern movies.  The main characters are unique and have their own kind of problems.  The side characters aren't too one-dimensional but not enough to be a main character in my opinion.  The writer has a very subtle humor tone and there are various instances of symbolism.  For example, all the stuffed birds and shots of Norman making him look like a bird when he talks and chews.  This is also in reference to the main hero's last name, Krane, which is a type of bird.

2. "High school is just full of unique people and problems."

5. "Guinevere has a real group of friends to rely on."
6. "Not your average group of juveniles."

Pilot Critique #2

Chris and Olivia

Format: 3

Unique/Interesting Characters: 2

Entertaining Story/Conflict: 2

A little more immediate conflict that is in your face would be nice.  Format is good and correct.  The characters aren't too unique yet, but that's because it is just the first 10 scenes.

Pilot Critique

Format: 2

Unique/Interesting Characters: 2

Entertaining Story/Conflict: 3

I think some of the formatting needs a little work.  Correct format on certain shots rather than in the descriptions.  The characters need a bit more traits or attributes, maybe spend some more time on exposition rather than getting into the conflict so quickly.  Conflict is pretty sudden, no time to think which is pretty cool.

Top 10 Horror Movies

Top Movies:
1. It

2. The Exorcist

3. The Grudge

4. Amityville Horror

5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre

6. Strangers

I can't name 10 because I am not a fan of horror movies.

I don't know what would make a horror movie story great other than a plot that someone could relate to or a known event.

Directors and writers use frequent 'jump' scares or sudden things with that well-known sound effect (sounds like shrween)

Lost Pilot Script Questions

The writers reveal character by dialogue and action for Jack, Kate, Hurley and Boone by giving them distinct one-liners or short spurts of speaking.  We first see Jack trying to help another person by having others help him to show he is kind of a leader and go-to guy.  Kate is shown being scared to do something for Jack but after a little talking, she overcomes her fear and agrees to do it.  Hurley retorts to Jack when he asks him to do things in a kind of unwilling sort of way.  Boone is a sort of stereotypical lifeguard and that he does not really know what he's doing but is willing to do things just for the sake of it possibly be helpful.  Jack talks in a more civilized and polite manner while still giving orders.  Hurley is talks more like a youthful guy and has enough in him to be a little sarcastic.

Concept 23 Brainstormer

Question #3:
I'd like to write a spy or espionage script.  Books like A Gathering of Spies and Deception Point are both interesting and fun to read.  The greatest objective would most likely be having to do with saving a specific person, country, or just the world in general.  The degree may or may not be successful depending on what elements of The Hero's Journey that I would incorporate.

Concept 24 Brainstormer

Question #3:

In the Season 2 premiere of The Walking Dead, two of the youngest cast members have terrible things happen to them.  I thought this was surprising because just before that some of the others in the group were having their own problems.

Desperate Housewives Pilot Questions

1. Main Characters - Lynette, Gabrielle, and Carlos
They are shown how they are currently, then with a flashback and how they used to be before now.

2. The conflict is how the two housewives are going to interact with each other.

3. The writing is very excellent, the writer makes each character have their own kind of dialect and was able to relay so much information in a small space.

Concept 22 Brainstormer

Question #3:
The T.V. show that we are writing is character-driven.  I know this because there is a separate plot in each episode and each of the characters are what is most important since there is no real overarching plot for the whole story that it is based off of.

Monday, October 24, 2011

Pilot Reflection

Our characters are unique because each one has a specialty that they bring to the table.  Since the setting is a high school, I felt it fitting that we introduce the characters together as a group and then to go more in-depth afterwards in separate classes.

Each character has their own problems that would be revealed over time rather than compressing everything into a single episode.  The obstacles would probably be telling the rest of the group about the problem and/or how they would handle it depending on who's problem it was.  The problems would be resolved either individually or with some of the others.

My So Called Life Influences

I would like to incorporate the narrative of the character as their thoughts.  I think that would help.  I would not like it to be so serious or dramatic or to focus on a love story.

Concept 20 Brainstormer

Question #2:
The opposing force in our Freaks and Geeks script are the Weir parents.  They want to have a family night out and Lindsay wants to go out with her friends.  The Weir parents try to not allow her to leave and Sam kind of wants her to go too since he will not have anyone to talk to at the restaurant.

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Concept 19 Brainstormer

Question #2:
I would choose Bonnie to explain the story at a lunch table or in the gym.  The backdrop at the lunch table would be kids getting their lunch and Joe and Alex confronting each other.  For the gym scene the backdrop would be Alex and Joe battling it out during a dodgeball game as if over Bonnie.

Question #2:

List of Shakespeare film adaptations:
Merchant of Venice,
All's Well That Ends Well,
Hamlet,
Julius Caesar,

Romeo and Juliet

A good number of adaptations did well or at least broke even on their budget.  They probably were able to achieve this by having Shakespearian fans go to see their favorite dramas and stories.

Citizen Kane's Non-Linear Structure

I thought it was pretty interesting from all the different perspectives.  At first it may have been confusing for some but to me you just had to keep in mind that not everything is in a preset order.  The advantages to a non-linear structure are that it was not so cut-and-dry as linear movies so you can not immediately tell what is happening next.  Another advantage is that the director and tell many different things at separate points that may or may not have anything to do with each other in that period of time.  The disadvantages to a non-linear structure are: that it may be too confusing for some viewers, there could not be enough story being told and it could be harder to follow what is currently happening on the screen.

I don't agree that it's the greatest movie of all time.  I don't agree because I did not really see a main plot unfolding, rather just a biography of someone else's life.

Freaks and Geeks Reflection

My favorite episode so far has been the Keg Party episode.  I liked that one the most because it had a lot of funny parts and we learned a ton about each character.  Nick finally starts to show his feelings toward Lindsay, Daniel and Kim get back together, Sam and his friends are very protective and Neal likes Lindsay too.

Get down, Mr. Forest!  He's charging his
          laser weapon!

Sam makes fighting and exploding noises.

LINDSAY knocks on his closed door from the hallway.

                                  Lindsay
Hey, why are you making so much noise?!
Keep it down!  Don't make me come in there
          and make you shut up!

Sam panics and hurriedly attempts to put away his toys.

Man, I hate flapjacks.  They're just fluffy air that you drench in syrup.  I don't know why so many people like it, there's nothing special about them.

Freaks and Geeks Dialogue

Sam talks very politely and is completely innocent.  He usually makes excuses for things he gets caught doing or tries to do.

Nick and Daniel like to joke around a lot.

Kim and Karen are mean to everyone and feel they are better than them.

Neal has a large vocabulary and tries to act more mature than the other geeks.

Bill is very random.

ComicCon Discussion

Three writers who broke into the business and how they did it.
1. Created a spec for X-Files and got an agent.  Eventually got a job doing Sliders.

2. Wrote a pilot for a show called Van Hellsing, was rejected.  A movie by the same name later had some features the original writer could not have (a crossbow).

3. Went to work on Sea Quest that was canceled soon after.  Wrote a spec for X-Files after watching it for two weekends and came up with a script after originally thinking about albinos.

Bar Fight Scene

                                                Javix
                          Four guys right behind us.

                          Are you Javix?

                                                Javix
                          Who's asking?

                                                Tough Guy
Someone wants you dead, and that
person's willing to pay some big
amounts of credits to have it done.

                                                Javix
Look, we don't want any trouble and
I don't think you want to mess with us.

Alec leans toward Javix.

                                                Alec
Looks like they're anxious to get at us.

                                                Tough Guy
We'll see about that, get 'em boys!

The men can wait no longer and jump the pair and attempted to pull their shirts and force them out of their seats.

Freaks and Geeks Questions

1.  I think Lindsay has a lot of conflict within her right now.  She wants to be friends with the Freaks while still being the same person she is with her family and true friends.  She doesn't know how to balance both sides and so she ends up hurting others for the sake of her trying to fit in.

2.  The major plots are: Sam and his friends going trick-or-treating, Lindsay hanging out with the Freaks instead of her mom, and the parents giving out candies to the trick-or-treaters.  Sam and his friends get beat-up and their candy stolen by bullies, Lindsay goes with the Freaks to cause terror throughout the neighborhood and ends up accidentally egging her brother, the mom and dad at first fail to appease the trick-or-treaters by handing out unwrapped candy (cookies).

3.  Sam and his friends split after being egged by Lindsay and her friends.  She attempts to apologize but it is no use, the damage has already been dealt.  Lindsay comes back home to help her mom finish giving out candy.

Concept 9 Brainstormer Essay

All Time Domestic Box Office Grosses:
1 - Titanic
Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio)
2 - Avatar
The genocide of the N'avi
3 - The Dark Knight
Setting - Gotham City

                                                             Blue Man Group in Gotham

Jack Dawson, from Titanic, is a sweet and handsome young man who had fallen in love with a cute girl on the cruise ship Titanic.  In Avatar, the main conflict is the arrival of humans to a new world called Pandora where an indigenous group of humanoids called the N'avi live.  The main story would revolve around Jack Dawson trying to solve the case of his lone N'avi friend's murder case.  His friend, J'lok was found dead in a sewer near the edge of Gotham after a policeman saw a floating blue body in the water.  While this is all happening, Dawson's lover Rose Bukater is having trouble adapting to this new city where crime strives and people are never safe on the streets or even inside their own homes.  This movie would appeal to fans of romance, science-fiction, and those who like mystery novels/movies.

Concept 10 Brainstormers

1.  I feel I know a great deal of fantasy fiction.  I could use some elements from one of the many series of books I read about fantasy fiction.  Those elements would include the type of architecture or costumes that would be used in the short film.

2.  The development of weapons is something I am very unfamiliar with.  At home there's not many resources available to me other than my dad who was only in the engineer corp.  He was a cartographer so he only drew up maps that the army used.  In the library there is such a wealth of information there would not be much trouble in finding books about weapon development, but a confidential thing (creating nukes, for example) would be a much harder subject to find information about.  I'm pretty sure no one around my neighborhood knows how to make weapons, so that is not a valid place to verify the accuracy of my findings.

3.  A subject that I am completely unknown to is the process of paper making.  This would be a good class for environmentally-friendly students that would like to learn the actual things that go on.  I'm not sure how the class would be prepared, since I don't know anyone willing to teach teenagers how to make paper.

Concept 8 Brainstormers

1.  I would set the scene at football game during night.  It would be filled with dialogue and maybe some crying/compassion if it was a drama movie.  It could be comedic too because of his role as Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean but even as Turner it was kind of more serious than the rest of the cast (Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, for instance).  The plot would be about how Reese Witherspoon's feelings for Bloom and giving him confidence for his (if he was a football player) performance during the game.

3.  Character - Priest; Setting - Phone booth; Prop - Doughnut.
The priest finds himself locked inside a phone booth while awkwardly holding a chocolate-sprinkled doughnut.  He has been told by a super secret agent spy to bring that specific doughnut to a phone booth and call a specific number.  Little does the priest know that there is an atheist ready to tackle him into the ground and steal his doughnut.

Freaks and Geeks "Pilot" Page 1

                                 FOOTBALL PLAYER
               Ashley, it's just . . .

                                 CHEERLEADER
I'm ready to work through whatever it is
we need to work through, but we need to
communicate.  I need you to talk to me.

                                 FOOTBALL PLAYER
                         (sighs)
               It's just . . . I love you so much . . . it
               scares me.

              (extension) CHEERLEADER
Why does it scare you so much?  . . . Is
it something that I've done?  Just tell me!

                                FOOTBALL PLAYER
Well, it's you, not me.  At least I'm almost
completely sure that it's not me.

                                CHEERLEADER
Oh, that doesn't matter!  As long as we
have the power of love, nothing can
               stop us!

                                FOOTBALL PLAYER
You're right, nothing you do can stop us
               from loving each other!
(end extension)

They kiss passionately.  The MUSIC SWELLS -- "Nothing's
right! I'm torn! /I'm all out of faith!"  Then, we MOVE DOWN
away from them and the music transitions into:

MUSIC UP: VAN HALEN'S "YOU REALLY GOT ME"

CHYRON UP: "1980"

Concept 7 Brainstormers

1. Time Frames
1) One Day - Unstoppable
2) One Week - Zombieland
3) Several Months - The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
4) 10+ Years - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Short Script Reflection

What I think was my best scene in my short script was the bar fight inside the cantina. I thought it was the best because it was the most action-oriented scene in the script and the dialogue was not very insightful into the story.  My worst scene was the beginning because there was not a lot of work put into the exposition into the two characters (Javix and Alec).

Concept 6 Brainstormers

Short Film - Pixar's Geri's Game (Sneak Peek)
1. 1) Age, Gender, Characters: Late 70's, male, 2 (Old man plays both sides)
2) Locations: One (The Park)
3) The problem: There is no one else to play chess with at the park.
The solution: The old man plays against himself with a different personality (White is conservative, black is competitive)
4) Length: 1min, 30sec
I liked the short film because I thought it was funny how the old man played both sides of chess with a completely opposite personality.

2. Yes.  The short could be made into a two-hour film.  There is a main problem in the short film but a temporary solution.  The problem being that he has no one else to play with because the park is void of other people to challenge.  The short could be lengthened by adding the arrival of a new character that can match the old man's skills in chess.  Then the whole film would be about how their relationship strengthens by just playing a game of chess for x amount of days.

3. My favorite feature-length movie is Glory.  There is a scene where the commander of the Union Army  was seeing how his regiment of colored men had terrible infections and their feet and finds out the problem as to why his soldiers have these diseases.
Beginning: Commander sees their ruined feet.
Middle: Commander confronts quartermaster who is in charge of distributing shoes for the army and demands boots for his men.
End: The regiment is given boots and socks to wear to prevent any more diseases and infections on their feet.
